Earth experiences day and night because it spins on an imaginary line called its axis. This axis is not straight up and down but tilts at a 23.5-degree angle because billions of years ago a meteor the size of Mars hit our planet, making Earth tilt.
Why is half of the earth at daytime and the other half at nighttime?
If light is facing an object, the object side that is facing the light will be bright, while the back side will not because the light cannot reach it. The sun is a star, so it is a light source, so if its light hits earth, then the part where the light reaches will be daytime and the backside will be nighttime.
Why are some days shorter and some longer?
Some days are shorter and some longer because the Earth is tilted on its axis as it revolves around the sun. When your part of the world tilts toward the sun, you get more hours of daytime and longer days. When it tilts away, it makes the daytime short and the night long.
