A Book Review of Holes

Holes by Louis Sachar

Louis Sachar is an American author. He is best known for the Wayside School series and the novel Holes. It won the 1998 U.S. National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and the 1999 Newbery Medal for the year’s “most distinguished contribution to American literature for children”.

Stanley Yelnats IV is a teenage boy who is constantly followed by bad luck due to an ancient family curse and is wrongly sentenced for stealing a pair of sneakers. Instead of going to jail, he is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention center, in the middle of a dried-up Texas desert.

The camp’s warden forces the inmates to dig one hole every day exactly five feet deep and five feet wide in the scorching heat. While the counselors claim this builds character, Stanley soon realizes they are actually searching for something hidden below the dirt.

Soon, as the story unfolds, Stanley’s great-great-grandfather’s history is revealed in the 19th century in Latvia. However, Stanley befriends a quiet boy named Zero.

One of the interesting characters is Zero. He is quiet, observant, and independent.

I disliked it when the other campers and counselors, Mr. Pendanski to be exact, bullied Zero and called him stupid and a nobody.

I recommend it to people or even kids above the age of ten because of its interesting plot, the mysterious characters, and their exciting adventure.
